Inorganic mercury removal from aquatic environments by multi-wall carbon nanotubes
Abstract
Mercury, a known toxic heavy metal for aquatic environments, can be accumulated in living organisms. Human exposure to mercury can adversely affect the kidneys and nervous system. In this study, using batch technique, Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) were selected as adsorbent for removing mercury from aqueous solutions. An ICP instrument was used to determine the amount of mercury in the solution. Moreover, the pH, contact time and initial concentration of mercury were studied to determine the influence of these parameters on adsorption conditions. Results indicated that the adsorption strongly depends on pH, with the optimum pH of about 7. Adsorption initially showed a high rate but gradually declined with contact time and finally after 120 minutes reached the equilibrium. More than 85 percent of initial concentration of 0.1 mg/l was removed at 0.5 g/l concentration of adsorbent and contact time of 120 minutes. Adsorption process followed the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption isotherms could also be described both by Freundlich and Langmuir models. MWCNTs, as adsorbent, are effective in removing inorganic mercury from aqueous solutions.
